QR and 2D Tags: Bridges to Transmedia Storytelling

We’ve been fans of 2D/QR Tags for almost two years and it’s great to see them moving into the marketplace and gaining some early traction in the States.

The reason for their appeal is that a 2D/QR Tag creates a “bridge” between two Worlds:  Print and Mobile.  As Producers with a background in cross-platform (transmedia) storytelling for nearly 15 years, in the past, we’ve dealt with disconnected platforms…now, 2D/QR Tags provide a “bridge” between two prime story locations.  Basically, adding a “bridge” to span one media to another makes “transmedia” more intuitive for the End User.

What will this look like?

The most basic example is the Children’s cereal box.  They are deeply engaging and almost always include some storied elements.  With a 2D/QR Tag you can migrate the User to a complementary and allied interactive story on a mobile device.  Done well, the User will acquire story information from the mobile experience that will help them complete their understanding of the story on the IRL physical box in front of them.

Because a bridge, once built, allows you to travel in both directions.

Please visit our imprint:  http://contentAI.com to see how we are creating interactive mobile stories that can bridge to the real world.

This Blog Feels Neglected

Wow, this has been one neglected Blog.

zyntroPICS Inc. is the Parent company to other Business- and Consumer- facing interactive digital properties, with active Blogs, however, we really need to keep this Blog current with general company news and views from the larger digital media perspective.  This is where cross-platform happens.  And, this is where we’ll provide updates on those initiatives.

The BIG PICTURE is that zyntroPICS remain story-tellers at heart, yet we are expanding the tools and platforms we deliver stories through. Our contentAI studios venture has been expanding rapidly with an emphasis on narrative engagement in mobile spaces. It has now spun-off an eLearning and mLearning Unit:

For conversational English as a Second Language simulations and learning.  Way back before they were called “Apps,” zyntroPICS was producing “mobile health apps,” (for Gen 4 iPods); and that interest and passion for engaging and meaningful interactive content remains to this day.  So, look for more mLearning and mHealth applications, where we also bring cross-platform tools to bear (Audio and Text is Step 1).

Coproduction on Interactive Narrative Prototype

We were pleased to participate in the prototype development of our affiliate’s “converged media” interactive story found here:

http://contentAI.com/capnwag

The earlier demo version (found on our Demo page) now features an enhanced story, more personalization, as well as being a pre-app version of how interactive narrative and imagery will combine to create memorable experiences. Combining video, stills and interactive conversation within a single experience points to a new method of storytelling, where the User participates in the unfolding of the Story itself.

Enjoy — we did.

Interactive Television and Storytelling

In association with our allied venture, contentAI studios, the Production and Writing team @zyntroPICS have been developing original franchise properties for cross-platform storytelling.    Based on the company’s experience with internet television properties, the goal has been to evolve and converge interactive storytelling in association with internet television.  The “passive” nature of internet television seems antiquated.  We want it to be directly engaging based on story, not just ads (though, this makes for a very interesting ad unit).

What will the experience be?  While watching a video series, the User will be able to Pause the video and then directly engage in a conversation with the on-screen Character through text or voice.  Contingent on the outcome of the conversation, upon triggering PLAY, the video will branch and trigger a specific sequence.

2010 looks like a great year.

zyntroPICS is getting a makeover

We at zyntroPICS are finally migrating our primary as well as imprint sites and blogs to reorganize the company’s online presence.   After spending so much time working on our partner and client projects, it seemed like it was about time we dressed up a bit ourselves.  This has meant deleting many older accounts and activating newer ones.

The downside is that some of our “history” is no longer immediately evident.  So, here’s the quick version:

zyntroPICS has been in existence since 1995.  The core Team include those with a background in traditional filmed entertainment (distribution, writing, production) as well as computer animation, digital FX, episodic television, streaming video, internet television (including producing one of the first “internet soaps” with brand integration, dual languages and day-and-date broadcast and online delivery).   Interactive production has ranged from early laser-discs, to emerging interactive video, conversational story content and  mobile applications.

Regardless of technology or platform, at heart, we are storytellers.  We just like playing with new toys and tools to connect with the ever evolving User.
